What do you know now you wish you could go back and tell “early you” about money?

Do not buy Universal Whole Life Insurance…and no 30 year home mortgages.

What financial advice do you live by? Who gave it to you?

Save part of every pay check…advice from my Dad and a close Uncle.

What financial tips or suggestions would you share with someone who may need encouragement?

Sacrifice something in order to Save.

What experiences have led you to where you are today?

There are so many…in short, I had great mentors.

Who has made a big impact on your life? Why?

There are many, but for the sake of answering the question, I’ll select Dr. Sam F. Parigi, Professor of Economics, Lamar University. He inspired me to study economics which was my under-graduate major.

What is the biggest financial challenge you’ve had to overcome?

Estate Planning in my retirement years.

What steps did you take to overcome the challenge? Or, what do you wish you had done differently?

Suppressed my desire/habit to do everything myself and engage a Financial Advisor, a CPA and an Estate Attorney.

What has surprised you the most along your financial journey so far?

That as a son of a Beaumont, TX refinery worker, I have amassed a very comfortable retirement. Having a supportive wife/partner in my case cannot be understated.

What has been the low point on this journey for you?

My parents passing at a very young age. That is why I have never invested in Tobacco Companies despite the temptation with their high dividends.

What advice would you give younger people or those just starting on their financial journey?

Same as I eluded to previously. You have to SAVE…no matter how small.

How do you measure sucess?

Being 69 and having NO debt.
